Chapter 1 · The Door That Should Stay Closed

The corridor outside Lady Evelyne’s chambers always smelled of clean soap and old stone. Tonight it also carried something sharper, like ink that had been heated too long. Adrian kept his steps small. His shoes were polished, but he walked like a man who could be erased.

He held the message between two fingers, folded tight, the seal still unbroken. Not for the duke. Not for the staff. Just for Evelyne, because only she could decide what to do with a promise that might ruin a woman or save one.

He passed the same torch sconce for the third time. Not because he was lost. Because the guards changed their watch in patterns, and Adrian learned patterns the way other men learned prayers.

His access was limited and tracked. That was the rule, written on paper and enforced by eyes. He could go near the inner rooms if the household needed him. He could not linger. He could not “misplace” a key. He could not be caught wanting.

Adrian stopped at Evelyne’s door. The wood was dark, the brass handle cool. Two servants had passed earlier with trays, and their laughter had faded fast when they saw him. They didn’t like him. They feared what he knew.

He slid the message into the small gap under the door—slow, careful, like he was feeding a secret to a sleeping animal. Then he withdrew his hand and wiped his thumb on his sleeve, even though the seal had stayed clean.

A sound came from inside. Not a step. Not a voice. A soft click, like a latch tested once and then left alone. Adrian froze with his palm still near the keys at his belt.

It’s just getting good.

Don’t stop on a cliffhanger.
