Chapter 1 · Payment in Silk · 10 min read

Dawn sat low over the windows of Giorgio Moretti’s office, turning the glass the color of old bone. Valentina stood in the hallway with her hand still on the door handle, keys cold in her palm, and listened to the quiet sound of breathing that didn’t belong to her father. Her father’s voice came next—smooth, careful, too controlled for a man who claimed he was only “handling business.”

“You’re late, Valentina,” Giorgio said without looking up, as if he had known exactly when she would arrive. He sat behind his desk like he always did, expensive pen between two fingers, but his hands shook around it. Two men stood at angles that made it clear they were not guests: one near the door with a coat draped over his arm, the other close to the filing cabinet, face half-hidden by shadow. The air smelled faintly of paper and cigarette smoke.

Valentina stepped in and let the door click shut behind her. “Where is Matteo?” she asked, because her mind reached for familiar names even while her stomach tightened. Giorgio’s eyes flicked toward her mouth, then away, like looking at her directly was a kind of crime. The man by the door didn’t speak, only shifted his weight, and Valentina felt the weight of a gun the way you feel heat before you touch it.

Giorgio’s gaze dropped to the folder on his desk. It was small, plain, and wrong in its simplicity—no seal, no label, just thick paper tucked into a neat crease. Valentina watched him slide it toward the side of the desk with two fingers, too slow, too trembling. “You shouldn’t be here,” Giorgio said, and his voice tried to sound like protection.

It’s just getting good.

Don’t stop on a cliffhanger.
