Chapter 1 · The Coffee Shop After Midnight
The city after midnight smelled like wet stone and burnt sugar from somewhere she couldn’t reach, and Lyra Ashford walked home with her hands tucked into the sleeves of her coat as if warmth could be negotiated with the dark. Her coffee shop door had clicked shut hours ago; the last customer had left with a laugh that sounded too bright to survive in the streetlights. Now the sidewalks held only her footsteps and the faint hum of traffic miles away, the kind of distance that made you believe you were alone.
She told herself it was nothing—just a bad stretch of weather, just the way the wind worried the alley walls behind the shop. Still, the streetlights seemed to dim a fraction every time she passed the same cracked storefront window, as if something watched from inside the glass and blinked slower than she did. Lyra tightened her grip on the strap of her bag and walked faster, the soles of her shoes whispering against damp pavement.
The first shadow didn’t appear so much as arrive—like the air decided to remember darkness and pour it over the street. It gathered beneath a streetlamp, too tall for any person, its edges feathered with something that looked like ash caught in slow motion. Lyra’s lungs locked. She stared, waiting for her brain to correct the impossible, but the shape only thickened, deepening until it swallowed the light around it.
A sound came next—soft, like cloth dragged over stone. She turned her head toward the alley behind the bus stop and saw movement there, a second dark figure peeling itself from the brick seam as if the wall had been hiding it. “No,” Lyra said, but it wasn’t loud enough to be a warning. Her voice felt thin in her own mouth.
It’s just getting good.
Don’t stop on a cliffhanger.
